User Problem

In the rapidly evolving world of cryptocurrency, managing and safeguarding seed phrases has become a critical yet often underestimated challenge. These crucial strings of words are the lifeline to one's digital assets, but they're alarmingly easy to lose or misplace. The fragility of physical storage was made starkly evident to me in early 2021 when a close friend's apartment caught fire. She narrowly escaped losing all her crypto seed phrases to the flames. The incident highlighted the pressing need for a more secure and resilient solution for safeguarding these pivotal keys to our digital futures.

The solution

Drawing from an unconventional experiment I conducted in 2015, I realized I might hold a unique solution to this pressing problem. For my bachelor's thesis on Cyborgs and technology, I took a bold step and implanted a microchip into my hand. Admittedly, over the years, this chip remained relatively dormant and underutilized. However, the harrowing incident of my friend's apartment fire and the frightening prospect of losing all digital access codes ignited a renewed perspective. If I could securely store my digital data on this body-embedded chip, it would mean always having my digital possessions with me, no matter where I went. Not just portable, but intrinsically safe from external calamities.

Impact

After implementing this innovative solution, the transformation in my friend's life was profound. No longer bound by the anxiety of losing her digital assets to unpredictable disasters, she found a newfound sense of security and freedom. The fusion of her body with technology provided an unparalleled safeguard, ensuring that her digital treasures were always within her, both metaphorically and literally. This integration not only revolutionized her approach to data security but also empowered her with a confidence that her digital legacy was, quite literally, in her own hands. It's worth noting, however, that this solution does require the implantation of an NFC chip. While there are inherent risks, they are relatively minimal and can be likened to those of getting a tattoo or a piercing. In the grand scope of the benefits, these risks are but a small consideration for many who seek unparalleled digital security.

Design Process

Embarking on this design journey presented a distinct set of challenges unlike any I'd faced in my design career. Though armed with coding knowledge, navigating React-Native was a fresh terrain, especially when integrating native functionalities such as the NFC reader. The looming question was: With my skillset, what was achievable, and what lay beyond my grasp? Determined to prevent this project from becoming an endless endeavor, I initiated the process with a clear blueprint. I meticulously drafted the essential functionalities – from scanning to saving multiple wallets, storing passwords, allowing edits, and most crucially, encrypting all information. The encryption was paramount to ensure data protection, considering the plethora of NFC reader devices in today's environment. This structured approach was a departure from my usual design methodologies but proved instrumental in navigating the complexities of this project.

Testing and Learnings

The testing phase is an ongoing journey, currently involving approximately 25 dedicated users. One unique aspect of this application is its infrequent yet crucial use case – it's not every day that a person needs to access their seed phrases. Consequently, the testing timeline is naturally extended. Over a year into this phase, I have accumulated invaluable insights from users who've been diligent in sharing their experiences, sending screenshots, and submitting bug reports via TestFlight. Each feedback is a step closer to perfection, ensuring I deliver a robust and seamless experience for all future users.
